The Guangdong Olympic Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in the Guangzhou Province, People’s Republic of China. With a capacity of 80,012 it is the largest stadium in China.
Opened in 2001 ahead of the Ninth National Games of China, it is used mainly for football matches. It was originally intended host the 2008 Summer Olympics until it was decided to construct the National Stadium in Beijing.
The design of the stadium pays homage to Guangzhou’s nickname, the Flower City with the roof resembling layers of petals on a flower. The stadium’s designers state that it “grows out of the ground” with the ribbon roof flowing over the seats which are also connected to the ribbon pattern in various colours.
The stadium has hosted football matches between Guangzhou Pharmaceutical F.C and Manchester United in 2007 and against Chelsea in 2008 as part of their first visit to the country.
