Yankee Stadium is without a doubt one of the most iconic stadiums in the world. Opened in 2009 as an upgrade from the original Yankee Stadium, it is the home of the Major League Baseball team, New York Yankees (as the name suggests). The venue is also the home of New York City FC of Major League Soccer (MLS). It is located approximately one block north of the original Yankee Stadium which now serves as a public park and heritage field.
Staying true to its roots, the stadium incorporates replicas of parts of the original Yankee Stadium such as the frieze that lines the roof. Although the construction of the stadium began in 2006, the project faced many delays and controversies including the significantly high public cost and loss of parkland. The price tag of $2.3 billion (US) makes it the most expensive stadium ever built.
Since the reopening, like the original stadium, the venue has hosted many sporting events other than baseball such as Ice Hockey (NHL), boxing, international and domestic soccer and college football. It has also hosted non-sporting events such as Jay-Z and Eminem, Madonna and Paul McCartney
