Stadio San Paolo is the home of SSC Napoli of the Serie A and is located in the western Fuorigrotta suburb of Naples, Italy. It is the third largest football stadium in Italy after Milan’s San Siro and Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.Built in 1959, the stadium was renovated in 1989 ahead of the 1990 FIFA World Cup and again in 2018. The stadium currently holds a touch under 55,000 spectators.
San Paolo was also the home of Diego Maradona, playing a majority of his football with Napoli (including two titles). The superstar who was a hero to local supporters would become a villain at this venue when it hosted the World Cup semi-final in 1990 between Italy and Argentina. The match finished 1-1 after extra time and saw Maradona scoring the winning penalty for Argentina, he would subsequently leave Napoli the following year. Napoli is yet to experience domestic success in the Serie A since Maradona’s time at the club.
