The Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, also known as the May Day Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Rungra Island, Pyongyang, North Korea which was opened on 1 May 1989 (hence the name). Although there are claims that the stadium holds 150,000, other figures suggest that the capacity is actually 114,000, either way, it is the largest stadium in the world. The site occupies an area of 20.7 hectares (51 acres).
The stadium is used for football matches and the occasional athletics event, however, its main event is the Mass Games of the Arirang Festival, a mass gymnastics and artistic festival featuring over 100,000 participants. The games usually take place in August or September. The games were held annually between 2002 to 2013 (except 2006). After a five year hiatus, the games returned in 2018 for a performance entitled ‘The Glorious Country’.
