The Mercedes-Benz Superdome or simply referred to as the Superdome, is located in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. It is the home of the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). Opened in 1975, the stadium is situated near the Smoothie King Center 13-acre (5.3 ha) expanse and the 83m (273-foot) dome is made of a lamellar multi-ringed frame and has a diameter of 207m (680 feet), making it the largest fixed domed structure in the world.

With a capacity of over 72,000, the stadium’s size and location in a major tourist destination, the Superdome regularly hosts major events such as the Super Bowl (seven in total), College Football Championship Game, and the Final Four in college basketball. The stadium was also the home of the New Orleans Jazz (now Utah) of the National Basketball League (NBA) from 1975 to 1979. The stadium has also held soccer, rugby, basketball and baseball events. Non-sporting events include The Rolling Stones, Whitney Houston, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica and Faith No More concerts.

The Superdome also gained international attention when it housed thousands of people seeking refuge and shelter from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The building suffered extensive damage as a result of the storm and was subsequently closed for several months afterward. During this period, the building was completely refurbished and reopened in time for the Saints’ 2006 NFL season.
