Opening in 1957, Lambeau Field is home to the Green Bay Packers located in Green Bay, Wisconsin and is one of the most famous venues in National Football League (NFL). Originally known as City Stadium, it was renamed in August 1965 in memory of the Packers’ founder, player and long-time head coach, Curly Lambeau, who had died two months earlier. The stadium’s street address is also located on Lombardi Avenue, which was named in honor of former head coach, Vince Lombardi.
The stadium has seen many face lifts and expansions (the most recent in 2013) which have allowed the Packers to play home games here for a record breaking 51 seasons, breaking the record set by the Chicago Bears at Wrigley Field (1921-1970). Although, Soldier Field is an older venue, it did not serve as the Bears’ home field until 1971.
With a capacity of 81,441, Lambeau Field is the fifth largest stadium in the NFL. This charismatic stadium predominantly serves as an NFL venue; however, it has hosted an Ice Hockey match, a snowmobile race and only four music concerts including Survivor and Billy Joel.
Fun fact: Green Bay’s population is only 25,000 more than the capacity of Lambeau Field.
