Lake St. Moritz is a lake (as the name suggests) at St. Moritz, Switzerland. The venue is normally used for Horse Racing (White Turf) and Polo matches during the winter months (when the lake has frozen over), but is also used a a cricket venue (on ice) since 1990. English cricketer, David Gower famously once parked his rental car on the lake which broke over night and sank.
Polo matches are played with a modified, slightly larger and lighter red ball is used that is easily visible in the snow. In addition to Polo matches, each February the ‘White Turf’ horse racing event is held on the frozen lake over three weekends. This has been held annually since 1907 and attracts wealthy tourists for to the lake for champagne, caviar and punting. Also part of this event is skijoring, which is a type of race where thoroughbred horses compete without jockey on their back, but instead skiers in tow (similar to hardness racing).
Also occurring in February of each year, The Cricket on Ice tournament is held on the lake and is the most prestige on the Swiss cricketing calendar drawing cricket enthusiasts, high profile businessmen and international cricketer.
Another notable one-off event held at the lake was the 2018 ‘Ice Cricket Challenge’ with past cricket champions; Mike Hussey, Andrew Symonds, Virender Sehwag and Shahid Afridi all taking part in the fun.
