Opened in 1938, Estadio Alberto J. Armando is located in La Boca district in Buenos Aires and is the home of (and owned by) Boca Juniors, one of the most famous teams in Argentina with approximately 16 million fans (the highest in Argentina). It is commonly known as La Bombonera (The chocolate box translated into English), due to its shape, with a flat side on one side of the pitch and three steep stands around the rest of the stadium. The unusual shape of the stadium has led to excellent acoustics being nicknamed “La Doce” (12th man) as it often creates an intimidating atmosphere for away teams.
The pitch at La Bombonera is the minimum size required under FIFA regulations – 105m x 68m. While it is primarily used as a football stadium, it has also hosted musical acts such as Lenny Kravitz, Elton John, and the Bee Gees.
