When opened in 1903, the stadium was the biggest in the world with a capacity in excess of 100,000. The capacity was increased further between 1927 and 1937 reaching almost 150,000. The record crowd was set in 1937 when 149,415 people attended a match between Scotland and England. In 1977, tighter safety regulations saw the capacity decrease to 81,000, with renovations completed in 1999 reduced the capacity further to 51,866

Other than hosting matches for these teams, Hampden regularly hosts matches during the business end of the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup. In addition to these, the stadium has also held a UEFA Cup final in 2007 between Sevilla and Espanyol. The stadium is also set to host three group games and a round of 16 game during UEFA Euro 2020.

In 2014, the stadium was also reconfigured as an athletics stadium in order to host track and field events for the Commonwealth Games. Other than sport, the venue has held concerts for artists such as The Rolling Stones, Oasis and AC/DC to name a few.
