First National Bank Stadium or simply FNB Stadium, also known as Soccer City and The Calabash, is a football and Rugby union stadium located in Nasrec, Johannesburg, South Africa. The venue is home of Kaizer Chiefs F.C in the South African Premier Soccer League as well as key fixtures for the South African national football team. It is located next to the South African Football Association headquarters (SAFA House) where both the FIFA offices and the Local Organising Committee for the 2010 FIFA World Cup were situated.
Opened in 1989, the venue was the site of Nelson Mandela’s first speech in Johannesburg following his release from prison in 1990. The stadium was renovated in 2009 ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in which it hosted the final and closing ceremony (this was also Nelson Mandela’s final public appearance). Soccer City’s capacity is 94,736, making it the largest stadium in Africa. The stadium’s exterior facade is designed to have the appearance of an African pot (hence the nickname ‘Calabash’) with the cladding representing a fire and earth tones underneath the pot. Additionally, no seat is more than 100 metres (330 ft) from the field, providing every fan with a good view of the action.
