Part of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Arthur Ashe Stadium is the centre court for the US Open tennis tournament. With a capacity of 23,771, it is the largest tennis stadium in the world. The venue was opened in 1997 as a replacement for Louis Armstrong Stadium (which is also used), the previous venue of the US Open, it is named after Athur Ashe, the winner of the first US Open in 1968.
In 2013, after five straight years of rain delays for the men’s final it was decided that a retractable roof would be installed. This was completed in 2016. The stadium is primarily used as a tennis facility, however, in 2008, it hosted the first ever outdoor WNBA game between New York Liberty and Indiana Fever.
In addition to Arthur Ashe Stadium, there are 22 inside courts, and 12 further outside courts including Louis Armstrong Stadium (also with a retractable roof) which seats 14,000 spectators. Each of these courts feature Deco Turf cushioned acrylic surfaces.
InMarch 2020, Billie Jean King National Tennis Center became a 350-ben field hospital to assist the health demands of the COVID-19 pandemic.
