Located virtually across the bridge from Yankee Stadium in Queens, New York City, Citi Field is home to the New York Mets of the National League division of the Major League Baseball MLB. Completed in 2009, the stadium was built as a replacement for the adjacent Shea Stadium, although the capacity is significantly (approximately 15,000) less.
Opened on March 29th, 2009, with a college baseball game between St. Johns and Georgetown, the Mets played their first game several days later on April 3rd and again the following day against the Boston Red Sox as charity exhibition games. The Mets’ first regular season at the stadium was a bit over a week later against the San Diego Padres on April 13th, 2009.
Influenced by the Pittsburgh Pirates‘ PNC Park and also Great American Ball Park, Coors Field, and Citizens Bank Park, the stadium features an overarching bridge symbolic to 2,027 bridges which link New York City and the Mets logo. In the outfield is a pedestrian bridge which resembles the Hell Gate Bridge linking Queens and the Bronx. The stadium also features a Party Deck in the left field called ‘Party City’.
In 2013, Citi Field hosted the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, making it the second time the Mets have hosted the event. Other than baseball, the stadium has hosted the 2018 NHL Winter Classic between the New York Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres and in 2015, it hosted a legends cricket match which featured Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne. Non-sporting events include Paul McCartney and Billy Joel concerts.
