The Basin Reserve or “The Basin” as it is commonly known, is located in Wellington, New Zealand. Its primary use is for Test, first-class and on-day cricket and is the home of the New Zealand Cricket team and also the Wellington Firebox. Established in 1868, it is the oldest test cricket venue in New Zealand. Normally, earthquakes would be bad news for a cricket stadium, however, on January 23rd, 1855 an earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale actually created The Basin. Prior to this, the area was a lagoon with plans to link it to the nearby Cook Strait by a canal. Damage from the earthquake caused the area to raise by 2 metres (6.6 feet) and became a swamp as a result. Plans for the canal were cancelled with the decision to use the space for recreational purposes.
